The Legend
The Headless Horseman on Roblox
Roblox players know the Headless Horseman twice over: as the ghost in Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and as Roblox’s own avatar bundle. In The Sleepy Hollow Experience any player can put on his costume at the statue and ride as him.
Who is the Headless Horseman on Roblox?
On Roblox the Headless Horseman is two things: the ghost of a Hessian trooper in Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and Roblox’s own Headless Horseman avatar bundle, sold in the Avatar Shop. In The Sleepy Hollow Experience any player can put on his costume at the statue and ride as him at no cost.
The Horseman in the story
Washington Irving published The Legend of Sleepy Hollow in 1820. Its ghost is “the apparition of a figure on horseback, without a head,” said to be a Hessian trooper whose head was carried off by a cannon-ball in the Revolutionary War. He is buried in the churchyard, rides out each night to look for his head, and must be back before daybreak. At the end of the story he rises in his stirrups and throws that head at Ichabod Crane. In the morning the searchers find Ichabod’s hat and, beside it, a shattered pumpkin.
Roblox’s own Headless Horseman
Roblox sells a Headless Horseman bundle of its own in the Avatar Shop. Roblox made it and Roblox sells it; it has nothing to do with our game. Roblox’s records date its body parts to October 2013 and its newer Headless Head to October 2023. The bundle holds the rider’s torso, arms and legs and two heads: Roblox’s Headless Head, and the bundle’s original head from 2013. Its whole description in the shop is one line: “No, you must believe me. It was a horseman, a dead one. Headless.”
When we checked on October 11, 2026, the shop listed the bundle for sale at 31,000 Robux. Roblox sets the price and decides when it is on sale, so the shop page is the place to look for today’s price.
What headless means on Roblox
On Roblox, “headless” means an avatar wearing the Headless Head, the head item from this bundle. The head does not show, so the character looks as if it has none. Roblox lists the head as off sale on its own; it comes with the bundle. That is why a headless avatar is a mark of the bundle, and why so many players know the name: more than three million have marked the bundle a favorite in the shop.
Two Horsemen, one legend
Roblox’s bundle and our village are two separate things that share one ghost. The bundle is a costume for your avatar. The Sleepy Hollow Experience is a place: Irving’s village in 1790, with a bridge to cover by day and the Horseman riding at nightfall. You do not need the bundle to ride as the Horseman in our village.
In Irving’s words
Irving, on why the Horseman rides, and the name the country gave him.
Washington Irving, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, 1820. The voice reading Irving in the films was designed for Sleepy Hollow with ElevenLabs. It is not a recording of any person. The whole story is free to read.
Indeed, certain of the most authentic historians of those parts, who have been careful in collecting and collating the floating facts concerning this spectre, allege that the body of the trooper having been buried in the churchyard, the ghost rides forth to the scene of battle in nightly quest of his head, and that the rushing speed with which he sometimes passes along the Hollow, like a midnight blast, is owing to his being belated, and in a hurry to get back to the churchyard before daybreak. Such is the general purport of this legendary superstition, which has furnished materials for many a wild story in that region of shadows; and the spectre is known at all the country firesides, by the name of the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow.
On Roblox
In the game
Put on his costume at the statue in the village square and ride as the Horseman yourself. You need nothing from the Avatar Shop: the game is free to play, nothing is sold inside it right now, and the costume is earned at the statue, not bought. When the bell rings at nightfall he rides, whether you play alone or with friends. Pumpkins by the lanterns rear his horse, a friend can help you up, and the covered bridge is the one place he cannot cross. Every night you survive is kept on your name.
